Project of new regional jet was announced in September 2001.
First flight is scheduled for year 2004. Construction schedule is already signed, and some manufacturing assignments are already done. For example, the wing assembly (as the most complicated part) will take place at Kharkov aviation works.
Major obstacle to this project is poor (near death) conditions of aviation market in both Russia and Ukraina. Developers hope that creation of leasing companies may help to re-start aviation industry.
Some experts consider An-148 "a PR project". Despite good projected performance, An-148 is not a major necessity for the market, but can help the Antonov ANTK to prevent leak of the state budget R&D funds to the "lesser" design bureaus located at the major manufacturing plants.
