An AEW version of the An-72 with a radome on the forward swept tailfin. Third engine in fuselage serves for aircraft carrier takeoff. Seen in Gostomel, at test flight and tuning base of Antonov OKB in 1987. Two were built for "Tbilisi" (AKA "Admiral Kuznetsov") aircraft carrier.

Two or three built. The An-71 was cancelled, because the Yak-44 was preferred (?).
