Project of seven-seat aircraft started in 1936. ANT-43 was ordered as a army liaison ('shtabnoj') aircraft, but also could serve as a passenger carrier. It was an enlarged reproduction of the I-14 fighter, with smooth metal skin and retractable landing gear.
Technological novelties (similar to those of Douglas DC-3) resulted in 'over-improvising'. The plans instead of conventional drawings were made on stencils which were to be applied to sheet metal for cutting. Too many parts and assembly was done 'on the spot', without any drawings and calculations.
ANT-43 was built in 1938, but never reached flight trials. TsAGI expertise expressed doubt in aircraft strength and barred flights. Designer had no chances to affect the decision, because was imprisoned at the time.
The only technical data available to me is the 800hp Gnome-Rhone 14Krsd engine.
