Gakkel-1/YaMG, Ya.M.Gakkel

Gakkel-1, 12k b/w drawing from the "History of aircraft construction in the USSR", Vol.1 p.58

Biplane, built using bamboo, wood and fabric. Lower wing was placed well ahead of the upper one (~0.5 of the chord). Two propellers (placed between the wings) were driven by belts from the single engine. Ailerons were installed between the wings, tailbooms were 'integrated' with main gear structure (quite elegant scheme - A.S.).

One of the first airplanes in the world featuring aerodynamically shaped wing struts.

During engine trials carburetor caught fire, and aircraft was badly damaged. Ya.M.Gakkel decided not to restore it, because system engine-belts-propellers was too complicated and unreliable. In his following designs he used normal scheme with single propeller.
