Almost unknown aircraft, inherited a lot from Gakkel-III design. During assembly design was revised several times. Wing span was increased, additional struts installed. S-profile of the Gakkel-III wing not used any more. Upper wing carried ailerons.

Aircraft was radically re-engined with 100hp Argus engine, one of the most popular among Russian aircraft designers at the time.

It was flown several times, and rebuilt as the Gakkel-VI.
