I-1, D.P.Grigorovich

Project of the I-1 was presented in 1921. It carries same designation as the I-1 N.N.Polikarpov, because was created under same State Order. Aircraft was built in very short time (during Fall 1923).

Single-seat biplane fighter of wooden construction, with a neatly cowled engine (cooling problems during first tests). Radiators were installed on landing gear struts. It was fastest aircraft at Moscow Central Airfield (Khodynka (Frunze) Airfield), and its flights were very impressive. It was maneuverable, but...

In short time it was found that handling (stability) and climb were unsatisfactory. I-1 was redesigned, becoming the I-2.
