Despite the crash of N°7211 prototype, in May 1938 designers were invited for meeting with Aviation Industry leadership, and in Fall 1938 they were assigned to bring '7211' to a production state.
First two prototypes had fixed landing gear like on the N°7211. They had open cockpit. More powerful engines were installed, and corresponding changes to the cowling were introduced. Air intake was installed on top of the cowling. Machineguns were fitted, gun blast tubes installed.
Both 'products 7' were ready on Spring 1939 and flown by P.M.Stefanovskij, L.M.Maksimov and N.I.Nikolaev.
It was obvious that aircraft with fixed landing gear are obsolete. In addition, small plane size restricted propeller diameter. Small 2-blade VISh-26 propeller (2.8m) demanded a gearbox.
Those requirements were fulfilled in products '8' and '9'.
