The Five Year Plane for experimental aircraft design (starting 1928) contained, among others, an assignment for A.N.Tupolev to develop the I-5, single-seat mixed construction fighter powered by either the Bristol Jupiter VII engine or the experimental M-36 power plant. The aircraft supposed to be delivered in September 1929.
But A.N.Tupolev was busy with development of the all-metal bomber, and the ANT-12 project (bureau designation for the I-5) moved very slowly... Aircraft was not finished, but project was revised in December 1929 to became I-8 (ANT-13).
