The second radar-equipped interceptor of the MiG-17 family, identical in appearance to MiG-17P. Its prototype SP-7F was mechanically a hybrid of MiG-17P and MiG-17F airframes. More powerful engine allowed to regain performance of the original day-time aircraft. The only parameter suffered was the turn time.
The 'Izumrud' (Emerald) radar set allowed to detect targets at 12km and bring them down with large caliber guns at 2km range. Starting from the 25th aircraft in the 6th production block upgraded 'Izumrud-2' PR-5 radar was installed.
Built in Poland as Lim-5P and in China as J-5A (F-5A). Used by Vietnam AF while defeating USA intervention. Frequently preferred by Vietnam pilots against more recent MiG-19 and MiG-21 due to its good handling in close dogfight.
