K-8 missile was under development at OKB-4 since 1955. At the end of 1957 live trials started at firing range of NII VVS at Vladimirovka. Unlike earlier K-5, K-8 carried both heat-seeking and semi-active radar-guided aiming systems. Missile was substantially larger than competing K-6 and K-7, but was far more capable.
