Flying boat with M-11 engine. Project was initiated at 'Krasnyj Letchik' (The Red Pilot) factory and gained official support, because chronical failures of the OMOS kept Russian aviation without domestic trained flying boat (aircraft class MU).
Wooden MU-3 was very similar to the MU-2, but had much smaller lower wing and improved hull shape. It was built at the same factory as the first experimental Sh-2 and flown successfully in Spring 1931. Sh-2 had better parameters, and MU-3 lost the competition.
