Sesigned for observation, the Nieuport-12 served with the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service and the air forces of France, Italy and Russia. It was slightly larger than Nieuport fighter (X, XI) and was armed with two machineguns - one fixed synchronized with propeller and another on the rear defence turret. It differed from other Nieuport aircraft by transparent central wing section, ailerons narrowing towards the wing tips and wing struts outboard tilt.
Variant with 130hp Clerget engine was designated Nieuport-XIIbis.
Dual control trainers Nieuport-XIII-B with 80hp Rhone and Nieuport-XIV with 150hp and 175hp Hispano-Suiza engines were acquired in small numbers.
