In 1943 a liquid rocket booster RD-1 was installed at aircraft extreme tail. Booster provided 300kg of thrust. During trials in 1944 RD-1 exploded. S.P.Korolev (who supervised the booster installation) barely escaped.
Solid-state RATO bottles were also tried on Pe-2 (by pilot M.L.Gallai).
Both projects did not enter production.
