The Sh-2 two-seater (or at least parts of an aircraft) were spotted in 1980 by an Aeroflot Mi-8 crew in a marsh near Murmansk. A group headed by Mr. N.V.Anikin decided to recover the plane and restore it for the Aeroflot museum at Ulianovsk. The recovery was made during the first winter after the Mi-8 crew spotted it. They waited for the marsh to freeze so they could land near the wreckage.
The recovery team learned that the plane probably went down in 1940 but the reason for the crash was not known. The plane was brought back to the Egorievsk Aviation College formerly the Theoretical School for Aviation of Workers and Peasants Red Air Fleet of Russian Federation. The restoration was begun by N.V.Anikin and V.P.Karmisov both instructors at the school. Much of the wood was not usable for the restoration, only some of the metal parts. The engine was badly damaged but the team found another M-11 in Latvia and brought it to Egorievsk. Between the two engines they had enough to make one airworthy.
The team found a retired engineer in St. Petersburg who worked with Shavrov himself. This man had some drawings of the plane and was very helpful in the project. Unfortunately I do not know his name. The students and their two instructors set about the task of rebuilding the plane and finished it in 1986. For some reason the Aeroflot museum at Ulianovsk did not want the plane so in 1989 they offered it to a good friend of mine in Moscow Mr. Dimitri A. Sokolski. I flew to Moscow and began a two year effort to acquire the plane. The Sh-2 arrived at our museum in February of 1993.
The plane was tested on a lake near Egorievsk where it did fly briefly. We feel it is to rare and valuable to fly but I understand another Sh-2 is now airworthy at the Russian Air Force Test Facility outside Moscow. There is no serial number or data plate on our Sh-2 so I am unable to determine where and when it was built. I know some survived in service with Aeroflot until 1964, but I am only aware of the two survivors.Albert Stix
