Experimental development of the T-43, built to accommodate to a larger radar 'Oriol-D' (Eagle-D). This radar could not be installed in the intake spike of T-43 (Su-11). Immediately after the radar radome, two sharp-edged 'sector' intakes were placed.
The rest of airframe (including the engine) were used without changes.
Aircraft was built and tested in period when rapid progress of ballistic missiles (and ant-aircraft defence), together with changing political conjectures resulted in sharp cuts in aircraft design programs.
