Experimental development of the T-43. The afterbody fuselage flared out to contain two Tumansky R-11F engines, making the T-5 looking very odd.
Aircraft was built in dramatic period of Soviet aviation, when almost all development programs were cut in favor of ballistic missiles. Nonetheless, T-5 and it's sibling T-49 were built and flown, paving way for twin-engine interceptor with powerful board radar 'Oriol-D' (Eagle-D) T-58.
