Reconnaissance variant of the Tu-2. Development started in 1942, and first Tu-2R with assorted cameras in the bomb bay was flown in 1943. While reconnaissance technology progressed, Tu-2R was permanently modified. It was presented for State Trails late in 1946. It was approved for production on April 9, 1947.
Only few were built in 1947 - 1948 because production age of the Tu-2 was coming to the end.
One of Tu-2R was tried in 1947 as a night bomber with downward-looking radar mounted under nose.
